Panhandle Trail
The Panhandle trail begins just east of downtown Newark and ends in Hanover Township.
The Panhandle Trail follows an active railroad right of way. The trail begins in Newark at East Main and Morris Street. It then runs east for 9.8 miles, ending at Felumee Rd. in Hanover Township, about 1.5 miles west of the Muskingum County line. The trail passes within view of the Longaberger corporate "basket" building. Continuing east, the trail parallels Marne Rd., passing the village of Hanover. At Hanover Rd. riders can exit the trail and ride south 1 mile, crossing SR16, to CR 686 or Brownsville Rd., to reach the Blackhand Gorge trailhead on Brushy Fork Rd. Continuing east on the Panhandle Trail from Hanover, the trail passes the Virtues Golf Club. This picturesque course has a clubhouse with pub and fine dining options. This intersection provides another opportunity to leave the trail and ride on roads to the Blackhand Gorge Trail. Turning south from the Longaberger Golf driveway, cross over SR 16 to SR 146, then turn right onto Toboso Rd. Total distance on roadways is less than 2 miles. Continuing east, the PanhandleTrail ends at Felumlee Rd.and Marne Rd.
